Description of the Department of Sociology

Department of Sociology is one of the six basic units of the Faculty of Education and consists of ten members. The mission of the Department, based on the Statute of the University “Aleksandër Moisiu”, is to create, transmit and develop knowledge through teaching, scientific research and services. By following contemporary teaching programs, the Department aims to form and prepare new researchers in the field of sociology, qualified and ready for the labor market.

The mission is also related to ensuring quality and meeting academic standards, as well as encouraging, supporting and developing the scientific activity of the lecturers. With a young staff, but rich in experience in the field of teaching and scientific research, the Department leads with dedication the student and professional journey, managing with quality and responsibility the progress of studies in both cycles – Bachelor and Master.

The academic staff of the Department attaches particular importance to scientific research, elevating the name of UAMD through active participation in scientific conferences (national and international), publications in scientific journals, organizing conferences, and crowning its efforts with scientific titles and degrees.

The focus of the members of the Department of Sociology is intensive and responsible work for the benefit of the student, academic-scientific, and local communities.

Department HeadProf.As.Dr. Juljana Laze

Juljana LAZE is an Associate Professor at the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University, Durrës, with a PhD in Sociology of Education. With over 15 years of teaching experience, she covers subjects in Sociology and its sub-disciplines. She has taught domestically and abroad and has developed research projects on educational policies. Having international experience as a visiting lecturer, she has created a wide network of academic collaborations with universities and research institutions in Europe. Prof. as. dr. Laze has also been recognized for her ability to bring a critical and innovative perspective to her studies, combining sociological analysis with practical approaches to solving problems in the field of education. She is a Member of the International Sociological Association. Her research interests focus on the field of sociology of education.

LecturerProf. Dr. Lekë SOKOLI

Lekë SOKOLI (Prof. Dr) is a professor at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Education of the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University of Durrës. For more than 30 years he has been engaged in studies, publications and teaching in the field of sociology, philosophy and other social sciences. Prof. Dr. Sokoli is the founding director of the Albanian Institute of Sociology, founding president of the Albanian Sociological Association (ALBSA), as well as the initiator of the establishment of the Balkan Sociological Forum (BSF). Also, founder of the international scientific journal “Social Studies”, a bilingual journal (Albanian and English). He has participated as a speaker in scientific conferences at home and abroad. He is the author of over 25 books (monographs or university texts) published in Albanian or even in English.

LecturerProf. As. Dr Doreta KUÇI

Doreta KUÇI has made a significant contribution to the field of social work, developing social policies and practices for the protection of vulnerable groups. He has published articles and participated in national and international conferences. Prof. as. Dr. Kuçi teaches courses mainly related to the field of social work and social sciences in general, which focus on addressing issues related to social policies, social protection, managing vulnerability issues and social intervention for groups in need. 

LecturerDr. Enkelejda Cenaj

Enkelejda CENAJ is a lecturer in Sociology at the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University, Durrës, holding the scientific degree “Doctor of Sociology”. With over 15 years of teaching experience, she covers Sociology subjects and is an active member of the Albanian Institute of Sociology and the International Sociological Association. Her research focus includes unemployment, domestic violence and gender issues, with publications and contributions to social policies in the country. She mentors students and encourages research, contributing to the development of a new generation of researchers.  Her commitment to mentoring students and encouraging them to pursue research constitutes an important part of her contribution to the development of the new generation of researchers in this field.

LecturerDr. Merlina Koseni (Pograzha)

Merlina KOSENI (POGRAZHA) is a lecturer at the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University, Durrës, since 2007. She has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Tirana and a Master in Public Administration. She is active in the development of social policies and participates in national and international conferences, with numerous publications in scientific journals. She has contributed to the education and training of students, preparing them to provide high-quality services in the social sector and to address complex community issues. Currently, she holds the position of Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Education, UAMD. She is a member of the Albanian Institute of Sociology.

LecturerDr. Jak Simoni

Jak SIMONI is a lecturer at the University of “Aleksandër Moisiu” and the University of Tirana. With a doctorate from the University of Tirana and a degree in philosophy from the University of Milan, he teaches courses such as: Logic, Philosophy of Education, Critical Thinking, etc. Simoni is dedicated to studies on formal logic and critical thinking, publishing and presenting articles related to this field of study at national and international conferences. In his lectures, he encourages students to think independently, encouraging them to engage in active discussions. His participation in conferences and publications in scientific journals testify to his dedication to the advancement of knowledge, helping to create an academic culture that encourages deep thinking and intellectual debate.

LecturerDr. Matilda Likaj

Matilda LIKAJ is a lecturer at the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University, Durrës, with a PhD in Sociology from the University of Tirana. She has over 12 years of experience in teaching and research in the field of emigration and social integration, with over 20 publications and participation in 40 conferences. Her book “Emigration and Social Integration” is one of her most well-known works. Her commitment to scientific research and teaching, together with her dedication to helping students develop a deep understanding of social issues, establish Dr. Matilda Likaj as one of the leading experts in the field of sociology in the country.

LecturerDr. Risvan Tërshalla

Risvan Tërshalla was born in Dibër on 15.12.1984. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Philosophy from the University of Tirana, Faculty of Social Sciences. From the same University and Faculty, he holds a Master of Science degree in Philosophy and there, he defended his Doctor of Philosophy degree. Risvan Tërshalla is a full-time lecturer at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Education, “Aleksandër Moisiu” University, Durrës. Meanwhile, during this period of time, he has also been engaged as a part-time lecturer for several years at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Tirana. Risvan Tërshalla is the author and co-author of several publications in scientific journals at home and abroad, and has participated in many regional, national and international conferences. LecturerDr. Ramiola KALEMI

Ramiola KALEMI is a lecturer at the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University. She completed her PhD in Social Sciences at New York University, Tirana, and holds an International Master from the University of Palermo. She has worked on numerous social and leadership projects in the field of urban management and gender role change. She has published scientific articles and participated in various conferences. Additionally, Dr. Ramiola Kalemi is the author and co-author of several publications in scientific journals and regional, national and international conferences.
