Description of the Department

The Department of Political Science is one of the three basic units of the Faculty of Political Science and Law and has an academic staff educated and qualified domestically and abroad. The academic staff is of the "Professor" and "Lecturer" categories.

With a relatively young staff, but rich in experience in the field of teaching and scientific research, the Department leads with dedication the student and career paths, and manages with quality and responsibility the progress of studies in both Study Cycles. Specifically, the Department of Political Science offers programs such as: Bachelor in “International and Diplomatic Sciences”, “History and International Relations” and “Journalism and Public Relations”, as well as a Scientific Master in “International Relations and Diplomacy”, “History” and a Professional Master in “Public Communication”.

In addition to quality teaching with European standards, the academic staff of the Department attaches special importance to scientific research, through active participation in Scientific Conferences (national and international), publications in indexed scientific journals and engagement in research projects. Also, the members of the Department of Political Science are focused on intensive and responsible work for the benefit of the student community, the academic-scientific community, but also the local community and the business world.

Staff:

Department ManagerProf.Asoc.Dr. Esilda Luku

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esilda Luku is a lecturer in History at the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University, Durrës, and Head of the Department of Political Science. With advanced studies in History at the University of Tirana, she earned the title of “Associate Professor” in 2016. She has experience as a postdoc researcher and Humboldt and DAAD scholarship holder in Germany. Ms. Luku is the author of the monograph “European Diplomacy towards Albania (1919-1946)” and co-author of several academic texts. With over 40 published scientific articles and participation in international conferences, her interests include textbooks, the history of socialism, and the culture of memory.

LecturerDr. Alida Tomja

Dr. Alida Tomja is a lecturer at the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Political Science and Law, at the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University of Durrës. She completed her studies in Political Science at the University of Tirana and pursued her Master’s and Doctorate in International Relations at the same institution. Dr. Tomja has contributed by participating in national and international scientific conferences, addressing issues of International Relations, with a focus on US Foreign Policy and American Political Institutions. Her research reflects a deep commitment to studies on global politics and American influence.

LecturerDr. Belina Bedini

Dr. Belina Bedini graduated in Political Science from the University of Bologna, Italy, and completed her Master and Doctorate in International Relations from the University of Tirana. She holds the position of Vice Dean for Scientific Research at the Faculty of Political and Law Sciences at UAMD. With extensive experience in writing, directing and implementing international projects funded by the EU, such as Jean Monnet, CBHE and Europe for Citizens, she is the author and co-author of several scientific publications. Her latest research is the chapter on the role of minorities in the anti-fascist resistance in Albania, published by Routledge. She directs the Jean Monnet Module 2023-2026 project on democracy and integration in Albania.

LecturerDr. Blerina Gjerazi

Dr. Blerina Gjerazi is a lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Public Relations. She completed her university studies in “Communication and Journalism” in 2007 and received her PhD in 2016 with her dissertation “Public Relations in the Justice System”. With extensive experience in the field of communication and public relations, Dr. Gjerazi has collaborated with international organizations and is the author of many scientific papers. Her main areas of research include media, public relations and human rights. She has published the books “Public Relations: Roles and Responsibilities” and “Mediatization of the European Union Integration Process”.

LecturerDr. Daniel Borakaj

Dr. Daniel Borakaj is a lecturer in Introduction to Political Science, Political Thought and Governance Systems, at the Department of Political Science, “Aleksandër Moisiu” University of Durrës. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science (2006), Master’s degree in European Studies (2010) and PhD in Politics and Governance in Europe (2016), all at the University of Tirana. Previously, he was a member of the FSHPJ Council at UAMD. Dr. Borakaj is the author of the monograph “Albania and Greece, from the perspective of International Relations Theories” and co-author of the university textbooks “Introduction to Political Science” and “Local Finance and Governance”. He has over 16 scientific publications and participation in national and international conferences.

LecturerDr. Denisa Tare

Dr. Denisa Tare completed her studies in History at the Faculty of History and Philology in Tirana and her Master of Science in History in 2010. She defended her PhD on the topic “The Arbëreshët of Italy and the Albanian National Question (1878-1912)”. Currently, she is a full-time lecturer at the Faculty of Political Sciences and Law, “Aleksandër Moisiu” University of Durrës, where she teaches subjects such as Modern History, History of Albania 1912-today, History of the Diaspora and International Relations. Dr. Tare has participated in many national and international conferences and has published articles on the historical and current role of the Albanian diaspora, the European integration of Albania and Kosovo, as well as Albanian-Italian relations and the Italian-Austro-Hungarian rivalry in Albania.

LecturerProf.Asoc.Dr. Dorina Bërdufi

Dorina Bërdufi is a researcher in Political Science, graduated from the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Tirana (2008). She has earned the title of Doctor in Political Science (2017) and Associate Professor (2023). Since 2013, she has been part of the Department of Political Science at UAMD, where she headed the department during the years 2020–2024. Bërdufi is a lecturer in the subjects Political Parties, Voter Behavior and Scientific Research Methods. As a scientific researcher, she has led and participated in national and international projects, with a focus on electoral integrity, accountability and voter behavior.

LecturerProf. Asoc. Dr. Eva Teqja Allushi

Prof. Dr. Teqja is a Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science at “Aleksandër Moisiu” University. She has held the position of Vice-Rector at UAMD and graduated in European Studies, completing her PhD in History and International Relations at the University of Tirana. Her research areas include democratization, transition, nationalism, governance, migration and Balkan-EU integration processes. In 2015-2016, she was a researcher at CREECA, Madison University, Wisconsin, USA. Prof. Teqja has contributed to media and politics, combining scientific research with public engagement.

LecturerProf. Dr. Lavdosh Ahmetaj

Prof. Dr. Lavdosh Ahmetaj is a member of the academic staff at the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Political Science and Law at the “Aleksandër Moisiu” University of Durrës. He holds two doctorates: in History with a focus on political Albania at the Peace Conference (1918-1920) and in Political Science and Law with a study of European political and legal doctrines. Prof. Ahmetaj teaches courses such as Political Philosophy, History of State and Law in Albania, and Public International Law. He has published a number of scientific works, including “Albania at the Paris Peace Conference” and “Philosophy of Law.”

LecturerPhD. Lorena Liçenji

Lorena Liçenji has completed her Bachelor, Master and Doctorate studies at the “Sapienza” University of Rome, Faculty of Communication Sciences. Since 2018, she has been an internal lecturer at the Department of Political Science at UAMD, teaching courses such as Communication Campaign Management and Public Relations. Her research areas include Political Communication and Marketing, with a focus on the communication strategies of Albanian political actors during election campaigns. Her studies analyze the relationship between the political and media system in Albania, the use of social networks and public relations instruments in the democratic process.

LecturerProf.Asoc.Dr. Manjola Xhaferri

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Manjola Xhaferri has been a lecturer at the Department of Political Science of UAMD for more than 15 years. She completed her studies in History and Ethnology at the University of Tirana, as well as a doctorate in Ethnology-Folklore at the Center for Albanological Studies. In November 2022, she received the academic title of “Associate Professor.” Prof. Xhaferri is the head of the courses History of Albania, Ethnology and Albanological Studies. She has published more than 70 scientific papers, including the monograph “Tirana in the Course of Centuries” and important analyses on diplomatic relations and Albanian culture.

LecturerDr. Marsida Ismaili

Dr. Marsida Ismaili has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Political Sciences and Law, Department of Political Science at UAMD since 2007. She completed her undergraduate studies in Political Science and completed her Master's degree in Public Administration at the University of Tirana. In April 2015, Dr. Ismaili defended her PhD in Public Administration at UAMD. She is an author and co-author of textbooks and scientific articles, a participant in national and international scientific conferences, and has contributed to national and international projects.

LecturerProf.Asoc.Dr.Mois Kamberi

Prof.Asoc.Dr.Mois Kamberi completed his studies in History at the University of Tirana, where he also defended his doctorate on the topic “Dibra in the period of the Albanian National Renaissance”. Currently, he is a lecturer at the Faculty of Political Sciences and Law, UAMD, where he teaches various historical subjects. He has contributed to the design of study programs and has participated in research projects and international scientific conferences. Author of over 50 scientific articles and several monographs, including “Dibra in the period of the Albanian National Renaissance” and “Positioning of Albanians towards the world conflict”.

LecturerDr. Pranvera Skana

Dr. Pranvera Skana is a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, at the “Aleksandër Moisu” University, Durrës. She completed her Master’s studies at the University of Westminster in London and her PhD at the University of Tirana in the field of media and mass communication (2014). Skana has been a “visiting fellow” at the London School of Economics and the University of Stirling. With experience in the fields of media, higher education, civil society and diplomacy, she has held positions as an advisor for media and diaspora at the Albanian Embassy in London. She is the author of articles and analyses, participating in many national and international conferences.

LecturerDr. Viorela Agolli (Polena)

Dr. Viorela Agolli (Polena) completed her higher education at the University of Tirana, where she received an Integrated Diploma in Political Science, and defended her PhD in Economics, “Political Economy” at the University of Durrës, Faculty of Business. She has held positions as Head of the Department of Political Science (2011-2013) and Deputy Dean for Scientific Research (2021-2023) at the Faculty of Political Science and Law. She has also completed the course “Democracy and Local Development” and has been a “Visiting Scholar” in the USA. Dr. Agolli is a co-author of several textbooks and has published scientific articles. She is active in national and international conferences in the field of democracy and transitional processes of democratization.

LecturerDr. Mirela Metushaj

Dr. Mirela Metushaj is a Lecturer and Researcher at Aleksandër Moisiu University, Durrës, Albania. She holds a degree from the School of Political Science “Cesare Alfieri” in Florence, Italy with a specialization in International Political Relations and a PhD in “Geopolitics” from the University of Social Sciences in Tirana. Since 2019 she has been a full-time lecturer at the Department of Political Science at Aleksandër Moisiu University for Geopolitics, Diplomacy, International Security and Terrorism. She is the author and co-author of a considerable number of publications in peer-reviewed journals in the region, national and international conferences in the field of political science and politics of the Western Balkan countries, security, geopolitical dynamics and transition processes through diplomacy. Her area of ​​expertise is Geopolitics and Diplomacy and Foreign Policy Analysis.
