History of the University

  • The University of Durrës in its modern form was established in 2006, but its roots trace back to 1380, making it one of the oldest institutions in Europe. The University of Durrës (Latin: Universitas Studiorum DyrrhachiumIt was established around 1380, but due to Ottoman attacks, it was relocated to Zadar to found the Studium Generale, or the University of Zadar, with its first Rector being Gjon Durrsaku.

  • Sources from the archives and libraries of the Franciscan and Dominican Monasteries in Dubrovnik provide information about the first university in the Balkans, the University of Durrës, founded by the Durrës Dominican monks of the St. Maurice Monastery, who had been operating in Durrës since 1224.
  • It is well known that Professor Gjon Durrsaku was appointed as the first rector of the University of Zadar (1396). It is explicitly stated at the University of Zadar that "The first rector was Gjon Durrsaku, since the University of Durrës was moved to Zadar due to the Turkish threat in Southeast Europe."
  • Another prominent figure from the University of Durrës, who is being rediscovered recently, was Ndre Durrsaku (mid-14th century - June 13, 1393). He is known as a doctor of theological sciences (University of Bologna, 1380), and in 1387, he was appointed archbishop of the Archdiocese of Ragusa.

Modern University

  • In its modern form, the University "Aleksandër Moisiu" Durrës opened its doors for the first time in the academic year 2006-2007 with about a thousand students from all over the country. With the opening of the University "Aleksandër Moisiu", it was not intended to open a new institution in the country, but to open a different institution, which would bring the best Western academic experiences.

Our Philosophy

The philosophy of UAMD is "student in the spotlight", which means that everything that happens in the university from the teaching process, services, activities and tools is at the service of the student. This is made possible through a dynamic and dedicated staff, a computerised environment that enables constant contact with the Western academic world and through diversified extracurricular activities.

A different institution

  • The way of developing the teaching process, the procedures of knowledge control, the recruitment of academic staff, the counseling of students, the university library service and the scientific research are aimed at realizing an academic experience unique in the country, which does not exclude any significant element of European and American universities.

UAMD Today

  • Today, the University "Aleksandër Moisiu" has 5 faculties: Faculty of Business, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Political-Legal Science and Faculty of Professional Studies. There are about 20,000 students in the three study cycles.
